I disgust myself. [Aug. 20th, 2008|08:08 pm]
HADOUKEN!

Street Fighter IV is officially only going to be released for the PS3 and XBox 360. This is a disturbing trend, as another of my favorite series, Soul Calibur, just released its fourth installment exclusive to the PS3 and XBox 360 as well. It makes me want a PS3. And that just makes me feel sick and repulsed by myself...

Short Thoughts!

I want to update my Livejournal, but I've no idea what to write about... So here's some quick thoughts...

On Tea

The tea store had to be put on hold until the fall (hopefully), due to my inability to secure funds for start-up. I think we might do better opening in fall/winter when it's cold out and people want hot tea anyway, but I may be mistaken... I'll hope for the best...

On Naruto Filler

The Naruto filler has begun anew... although honestly, the first episode of the filler was a hell of a lot more entertaining than the last canon story arc... And man! I was so wrong about Sai. I love Sai. Definitely a worthy and lovable addition to the main Naruto cast.

On Smash Bros. Brawl

Played a couple hours with Ryan, Pete, Corey, Eric, and Jen this weekend. Slaughtered them utterly, although Jen is getting surprisingly good. I can destroy human players, but can't keep up with the CPUs this time around. How can that be?

On Spectacular Spider-Man

Having watched 5 episodes of this, I can comfortably say that thus far it is the best superhero cartoon ever. It's Spider-Man at its best: a high school setting, live Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn, funny, and with NO MARY JANE!!

On New York Comic-Con

Jen and I are attending our first New York Comic-Con next Friday and Saturday! W00t! I can finally meet the two greatest creators of all time: Peter Laird of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame, and Stan Lee (of everything else)!

DB! Facts: Set 1 [Apr. 6th, 2008|07:26 pm]
DB! Facts: Set 1

Since I've began to include these in my AIM Profiles again, I've decided to keep an archive of them in my LJ this time as well, to give them some permanence.

I know. I rock.

DB! Fact #1: Dabid's favorite herbal tea is mint.

DB! Fact #2: Dabid owns two Webkinz. I'd like to say that they were gifts someone gave me and I didn't buy them by choice, but that would be a lie...

DB! Fact #3: Dabid watched the first 160 episodes of Bleach in a span of 50 days.

The NAME Game! Dabid needs -YOUR- help! [Mar. 27th, 2008|09:32 am]
[mood | hopeful]

The NAME Game! Dabid needs -YOUR- help!

Since returning home, Jen and I have been working on a top-secret project. A top-secret project that's about to be top-secret no longer, as I'm about to post about it on this extremely public Livejournal which'll probably turn up in Google searches around the world now. But these are dire times, and risks of this magnitude must be taken if victory is to be achieved. So true believers, I present to you...

Tea for me, and tea for you...

Tea.

Jen and I our working on opening our first small business, a tea retail store/cafe-type thing. Our vision for this store is to sell fancy tins and boxes of tea, tea sets, tea pots, tea paraphernalia, blah blah blah. But since no store can survive on tea retail alone, we'll also have bulk tea to go in take-out and dine-in. And baked stuff. (Made by Jen--not me. You don't want my baked goods. Seriously.)

Anyway, that brings us to our vital dilemma: a name.

We're going to be on Broadway in Saratoga Springs (god willing), so we want our name to be along the lines of "Saratoga Tea <something>". I liked "Saratoga Tea Embassy", but Jen thinks it sounds too long and snooty. Jen's mom wanted "Saratoga Tea", but that seems too short and not classy enough. And every tea "pun" name I see (ie Sennsibiliteas, Subtletea) just pisses me off.

After many hours of failed brainstorming and discussion, I turn this major turning point in the life of all mankind over to you, dear readers.

Name us, please.

BRAAAAWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLL!!!! [Mar. 11th, 2008|09:30 am]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl Impressions

Pillow!

I've been very busy with family junk and job stuff since this weekend, so I haven't had a chance to really sink my teeth into Smash Bros. Brawl. I intend to shortly, however, and then there will be full-impressions and I'll make my WiFi debut. Be prepared!

Impressions...

  • Ice Climbers suck now. There, I said it. Their smash attacks have laughably weak knockback, even charged up and together. I'd imagine they've been improved elsewhere now, but I'll need to investigate to find out where, exactly...
  •
  • Kirby and Ness have regained some of their power from Smash Bros. 64, thank god. Kirby's new running attack is an awesome breakdance, and Ness's Yo-Yo attacks actually knock enemies away again. Good stuff!
  •
  • Olimar and Pokemon Trainer are both characters that will require some practice. I faltered a lot using them, especially the Pokemon Trainer, as I don't understand exactly what each of the Pokemon's moves do... yet.
  •
  • Music for this game is simply incredible. The Casino Palace music from F-Zero GX and the Yoshi's Island songs are my favorites.
  •
  • The Temple from Melee is back. Thank god.
  •
  • Lucas kicks ass. I hate the little punk for the possibility that he may be a clone character better than the original (Ness), but his speed and acrobatics in-game make him a fun character to use. However, the way he's written in Subspace Emissary makes him look like the biggest puss ever, whereas Ness's role in Subspace Emissary makes him look slick as all Hell.

  • The game is still faster than my reflexes. I can't keep up. All of my memorization of the physics of every character, attack, level, and item from Melee is gone. I need to adapt. This will take some time...

Sonic looks different...

I need to do better... [Mar. 6th, 2008|08:39 pm]
[mood | dorky]

I haven't been very good to my friends the last year. Or maybe two years.

Outside of the rare occurence, I haven't spoken at all or even talked online to Dave, or Evan, or Ben #1, or Ben #2, or Amy, or Jenny, or Rojer, or Dallas, or Ed... even Thomas, who I like though I've never actually spoken to him. Hell, Evan grew up and I missed the whole thing...

Although I have two wonderful brothers in Ryan and Josh now, I don't even talk to them. This needs to stop.

But I vow, right here, right now, on this ridiculously adorable picture of Shino's team from Naruto below, that I shall do better!

Believe it!

Anyone who knows me knows that Naruto is the holiest of all things to me, so take this as my promise to try hard to do better. Believe it!

(And if you're one of those people I've neglected... forgive me. I'll do better.)

THE GREAT MOVIE QUOTE GAME

Da, na, na, na, na, na, na....

UPDATED 3/7 The results are in! The quiz is filling up fast... can -YOU- answer any of the remaining trivia quotes?!?

This is taken from Jen, after I guessed virtually all of hers correctly. w00t!

I will be THOROUGLY impressed with anyone who can do well on this. Are you up to the task? Dave? Evan? Thomas? Dallas? Do your best!!

1. Pick 20 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie. Or from your own memory.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search functions.
Replies will be screened to prolong the guessing
5. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
6. Those who guess correctly have to do this game next! (Theoretically.)

NOTE: Consecutive quotes indicate dialogue between two characters.

The "Big" Update! [Mar. 4th, 2008|01:29 pm]
[Current Location |Home Sweet Home in Albany, NY]

The "Big" Update!

Okay, here goes with the "big" update...

I'm such a cute droid...!

On Wedding Bliss:

See that? That's us (Jennifer and I), having been married on September 28th, 2007. I'm the droid. Cool, huh?

On Florida:

Jen and I left our jobs and lives in Florida behind us when we moved away last month. The less said about that, the better. I hated Florida, and I won't miss it. We made enough money to last us for a lonnnnnnggggggg time while we job-hunt, so life should be cool for a little bit.

On Smash Bros:

The Wii Smash Bros. game, Brawl, *finally* comes home this Saturday night! I've never been more excited for a game launch in my life. EVAR. Eric and possibly Ryan and I will be attending Gamestop's midnight launch tournament Saturday night, and I will do my best to put on an admirable showing, although I'll be flying blind with the Wiimote control scheme. I'll do my best, though!

As it stands right now I intend to main Lucario in Smash Bros. Brawl, but that's probably pre-mature since I've never played as him yet. Other possibilities are the Pokemon Trainer, Ice Climbers, Ness, and my old fall-back, Yoshi.

If anyone wants to exchange friend codes for Smash Bros, let me know. I welcome and challenge all comers!

Gotta catch 'em all... POKéMON!!!

The Biggest Mistake of My Life! [Nov. 18th, 2007|04:44 pm]
[Current Location |Satan's Toilet, FL]
[mood | disgusted]

The  Biggest Mistake of My Life!

I made the biggest mistake of my life this year.

No, it wasn't taking the teaching job in Pasco (otherwise known as Satan's toilet).

Nor was it to abandon my poor Livejournal and AIM accounts.

Buying comic books and action figures is never a mistake.

It certainly wasn't to get married.

No, my mistake was much worse. My mistake... was
this:

What a piece of crap.

I allowed Sony to woo me with the pretty graphics and exclusive Naruto and Star Wars games, but while those games have the franchises I love, they're missing a vital ingredient that I've only been able to find on Nintendo video games systems: Fun.

Having spent a couple dozen hours with a PSP, my love of gaming has almost been sucked out. My gamer's soul is like a barren wasteland. I must turn to Nintendo now, and pray that with Nintendo's grace I can still find salvation and love gaming again.

Forgive me, Miyamoto-sensei.

I shan't stray from the path of righteousness that is Nintendo again.

Homesick...? [Oct. 30th, 2007|07:22 pm]

I think I may be homesick...

Not for River (obviously), but for... Albany?

A place I never considered a home at all, but just a place between homes?

Is such a thing possible?

I wonder...

He's Alive! Dattabeyo! [Jul. 7th, 2007|01:41 pm]
[mood | busy]

He's Alive! Dattabeyo!

More than Meets the Eye!

On School: The spring semester has come and gone, and with it my academic career. At least so far as being a student goes. I graduated from The College of Saint Rose with a 4.0 GPA in mid-May, with a Master's of Science degree in Adolescence Education. I worked my ass off for that 4.0 to prove to myself that I could excel and achieve anything, and no one can ever take it away from me. Student teaching at Maple Avenue Middle School in Saratoga Springs, NY was the greatest experience of my life. I've never felt as proud, happy, loved, or sure of my future profession than I did working there. The lessons I learned and inspriations I gained from those kids will be with me for all the days of my life.

On Dattabeyo: I've been remorsing for months that we don't have an amazing suffix in our language to parallel the affirmation/emphatic suffix of the Japanese language: dattabeyo. When added to a statement, it adds a strong emphasis or affirmation that what's been said is true. Today I finally had the life-changing epiphany that we -do- have such affirmation words in English: swear words! Swear words aren't "bad" in our culture anymore, really. From elementary school and up, kids are swearing constantly. "This fucking rules!" "I hate this goddamn homework." "What the hell is that?" So many affirmation words around us! It's beautiful, dattabeyo!

On the Wedding: Our wedding is September 28th! If you want to come and haven't received anything in the mail yet (Thomas?), reply to this update or send me an E-Mail. It's been a pain in the ass organizing it and it's coming together at an expense that makes us wanna hurl, but at least it's FINALLY almost ready. Thank god we only hafta get married once. I hope.</font>

On Careers: I've taken a position teaching Language Arts (English) at a Middle School in New Port Richey, Florida. I signed a one-year contract with an option of renewal because Florida is -REALLY- different and I don't want to be trapped there if I end up hating it. It's between Tampa and Orlando, so feel free to visit us if you ever go sightseeing in Florida! We'll be leaving for Florida in about a week. It's sorta exciting, but mostly overwhelming and terrifying. This is what I have to do to be the best teacher to ever live, though, so I'll have to cope...

On Chris Benoit: Chris Benoit is the greatest technical wrestler to ever live. He inspired millions with his hard work, determination, and perseverance. He gave money to charity, was a faithful friend, and risked his life to entertain troops in Iraq. He died a psychopathic killer, driven over the edge by unknown factors. But does that erase the good? How can one live a life that touches millions positively, but be reviled for final actions against a few? All men do good and evil--shouldn't decades of doing good outweigh a few days of doing evil? That's what I believe, but I seem to be alone...</font>

On the Transformers Movie: Most fun I've had in a movie, maybe EVER. While it's not the philosophical masterpiece that Ratatouille is, it is both fun and funny. Having had the opportunity to attend the fan question-and-answer at Botcon with the movie writers, I can probably answer any questions that anyone may have about the movie. But put simply: This movie fucking rocks. Go see it. Again and again.

And again...

Let there be NARUTO!!! [Feb. 18th, 2007|11:58 pm]
[mood | ecstatic]

Let there be NARUTO!!!

It took two years and 85 episodes of filler... but finally... finally...!!

I watched a new episode of Naruto tonight.

"New" as in "canon". "New" as in "amazing". "New" as in "rejuvenating my soul".

The anticipation is building inside me to see what has become of beloved characters like Hinata, Shino, and Rock Lee.

The excitement of watching next episode previews and speculating on what's to come overwhelms me.

Seeing the continuation of Naruto at long last is likely the closest I'll ever come to a holy experience.

I'm marrying Jennifer on September 28th, so that's going to be the happiest day of my life. That has to be number 1.

But this... this is number 2.

Believe it.

Adventures in Student Teaching!: Week So-Help-Me-God [Feb. 16th, 2007|06:21 pm]
[mood | exhausted]

Adventures in Student Teaching!: Week So-Help-Me-God

For the last two weeks, I've been teaching two sections of 11th Grade English, 3rd period and 11th period. My host teacher said that I'd be taking over her 9th grade classes at some point, but whenever I've asked when she's always said "Not yet. I need to do this first." Or "I haven't seen enough lesson plans yet." Or "I'll look at your lesson plans another day."

So today, after the bell rings at the end of my 3rd period class and two minutes before the 4th period 9th graders come in, my cooperating teacher turns to me and says: "Let's start the new unit today. Go teach the introductory lesson."

I sort've went into shock, as I literally had two minutes to prepare a lesson. I grabbed the handouts I read the week before on the author of the novel the unit is on, ran down the stairs, made 60 copies, ran back up, and started class.

When my host teacher said that I was going to be teaching today, the 9th graders clapped and cheered. Seriously. I wasn't expecting such an outpour of support. Clearly my host teacher didn't either, as she looked like smoke was going to erupt from all of her bodily orifices.

The introductory class went better than I expected, but my host teacher still bitched me out. Apparently I just orally ASKED them questions about the reading, when I should have given the students a handout to fill out with the questions.

Let me reiterate: she wanted me to have a handout to give students with the questions I made up on the spot for the lesson I had two minutes to prepare for. How the fuck I would carry out such a miracle is unknown to me, but there it is.

I repeated the lesson for the 7th period class and they were MUCH better behaved than usual, but my host teacher denounced it saying that they were just setting me up so that they can misbehave and break rules later. Because they're like, devil children or something.

My 8th period class which I had no time to prepare for because I spent my day unexpectedly teaching 9th graders went alarmingly well. A 3rd period student stole my copy of The Grapes of Wrath, so I was forced to lead the discussion from memory and without the text or my notes. To my shock, the discussion was the best I've led during all of student teaching.

After class, my host teacher complained that I left the lights out for too long after a girl made a presentation with the overhead projector. Witch.

After school, my host teacher told me she wasn't comfortable with me bringing home the spelling quizzes over break, and so she wanted me to grade them all right then. After school and after my obligation to her was ended. And with her watching me grade and making such comments as "Why do you start checking answers with the last question? You should start at the top and work your way up the page!" and "I couldn't tell if that was a lower-case or upper-case letter. Mark it wrong! And the one underneath it too!"

One of my 11th grade students came in while I was grading and told me that she really enjoyed the discussion today and thought it was a lot of fun. I think flames may have erupted from my host teacher's butt at that point.

To close out the day, my host teacher asked "How many credits of English have you taken? ...30? Oh, well I took 48. I want you to write down all the English courses you've taken this weekend while you're home."

I wonder if she's planning to denounce not only me, but my education as well...

To Be Continued...

Adventures in Student Teaching!: Week 2.5 [Jan. 30th, 2007|04:32 pm]
[mood | pissed off]

Adventures in Student Teaching!: Week 2.5

My cooperating teacher is a complete and utter whore. She's been teaching 30 years, and she's stuck in the past. She keeps talking about how she hates young teachers and how she'll show me REAL methods, but all she ever does is lecture and give out worksheets. The proof that she's a stupid old biddie bitch is that she's working off a 1975 Core Curriculum guide. She's teaching in ways that were ineffective 30 years ago, and hell if they're not ineffective now.

Yesterday she broke her personal best by sending 6 kids in one class out to be suspended. She only got 3 today. Today was a slow day.

She told me the field trip was on February 8th so I planned my unit around that, only to find out today--from a student--that it's on February 7th so all of my dates are wrong. And then she has the audasity to act like I messed up. Whore.

She told me that she was going to hand out books today and then hand out and explain the study guide for the unit, and then when it came time to do it she said that I was going to. My jaw almost fell off and broke. I thought I did an admirable job ad-libbing, but my host teacher had a huge list of complaints afterwards. I said I'd do a perfect lesson for the afternoon class. She said that was "much better, but not perfect".

Once--just ONCE--I'd like to hear my cooperating teacher say something genuinely encouraging or kind to me. I won't hold my breath, though...

I'm giving my first full-class lecture/discussion tomorrow. I think I'm prepared, but you never know. Pray for me.

Here's a conversation on the topic...
ornithologists (5:15:51 PM): you won't fail, though, will you?
DabidAndDon (5:15:57 PM): I should hope not.
DabidAndDon (5:16:01 PM): I dunno. This woman's a bitch.
ornithologists (5:16:13 PM): make her some cookie?
ornithologists (5:16:15 PM): cookies
DabidAndDon (5:16:36 PM): She had a kid suspended for saying "sucks" in class. She has no heart.
ornithologists (5:16:49 PM): holy shit
DabidAndDon (5:18:41 PM): All she does is bitch about everything I do. If she sends me down to make copies and there's a line, I get bitched at because I should've come back and asked for somewhere else to make copies. If I put down writing paper, the writing paper's ruled lines are facing the wrong way.
DabidAndDon (5:19:26 PM): She made me reprint a whole quiz because I had a question that ended in "to?", which is a hanging preposition. My thesis paper was filled with those--no one GIVES A SHIT.
DabidAndDon (5:19:29 PM): Except this woman.
ornithologists (5:19:53 PM): she's truly old fashioned
DabidAndDon (5:20:10 PM): It's probably a good thing I didn't tell her that I'm going to be the best English teacher to ever live. She may have taken it badly.
ornithologists (5:20:25 PM): she'd cremate you
ornithologists (5:20:48 PM): with her fire breath of doom, no doubt
